How to Install and Use Matrix

Matrix is much like discord and is very simple to use once setup properly. It is a very intuitive and user friendly program. The primary method of using Matrix is through a client called Riot, which we will discuss below. There are also alternative_clients for people who aren't big fans of Riot, but we have not thoroughly investigated these.

Installation for Browser (Windows/Mac)

  1. Matrix can be utilized on the browser by going to https://chat.brickshop.io/.
  2. Once on the site, simply hit “create account” and enter your chosen account details and hit finish.
  3. Simple at that, you are now a matrix users. You can get navigating your way to the #general:brickshop.io room on the server

Installation for Android

  1. You can install Matrix on your phone using the “Riot.im - communicate, your way” application in the Google Play Store.
  2. Once installed, open the application and hit create account, enter your account details.
  3. Once you enter your account details, makes sure to check the box, “Use custom server options (advanced)”; Once you check the box, a new text field will open titled “Home Server URL”, in that field you need to enter “https://matrix.brickshop.io” (see below)

Installation for iPhone (Apple)

  1. You can install Matrix on your phone using the “Riot.im” application in the App Store.
  2. Once installed, open the application and hit create account, enter your account details.
  3. Once you enter your account details, makes sure to check the box, “Use custom server options (advanced)”; Once you check the box, a new text field will open titled “Home Server URL”, in that field you need to enter “https://matrix.brickshop.io” (see below)

Installation for Desktop

Identical to the process of logging in to a Matrix server in your web browser, Riot is available as a Desktop application. These are links to the latest versions as of 2020-06-05 (riot v1.6.2)

Alternative clients

Not all of these clients have been thoroughly vetted, but if you are not satisfied with Riot, these may be worth looking into. They may be buggy or have unknown security flaws. Information sourced from Matrix.org on June 5th 2020.
